Дуглас Найджел Марлетт (6 декабря 1949 — 10 июля 2007). Уроженец Гринсборо, Северная Каролина. Марлетт в первую очередь известен как автор комикса Kudzu, перепечатанного газетами по всему миру. Графическое повествование о жизни южан принесло карикатуристу всевозможные награды, в том числе и Пулицеровскую премию (1988). Дуглас Марлетт трижды удостаивался награды National Headliners за блестящую работу комикс-редактора, дважды — мемориальной наградой Роберта Ф. Кеннеди и также дважды побеждал на конкурсе Джона Фишетти, а также стал единственным художником комиксов, получившим стипендию Ниемана в Гарварде.

Его работы появлялись в журналах «Тайм», «Ньюсвик», «Нью-Йорк Таймс», «Вашингтон Пост», а сам он не редко появлялся на национальном ТВ США (в самых популярных передачах вроде «Сегодня вечером» канала NBC, «Доброе утро, Америка» ABC и проч.). Кроме того, он вел колонку в журнале «Эсквайр» (посвященную вопросам этики), а также публиковался в самых разных популярных печатных и интернет изданиях («Пари Ревью», «Мужской журнал», «Нэйшн» и тп).

В 2001 году в свет вышел его первый роман, книга под названием «Мост» была выпущена издательским домом HarperCollins. Годом позже роман был признан лучшим художественным произведением года по мнению Ассоциации книгопродавцев Юга (SEBA). Второй роман Марлетта был издан в 2006 году: книга «Чудесное время» удостоилась похвалы критиков и получила положительный отзыв от придирчивых журналистов отдела «книгочеев» газеты «Нью-Йорк Таймс».

Bill Clinton: Cultivate “the discipline of gratitude” (2006)

Thank you very much, President Cowen, Board Chair Pierson, members of the faculty. Dr. Olden, Dr. Gil …congratulations, we’re honored to be in your presence. To the family and friends in the Class of 2006, I thank you for giving my partner here and I the chance to be here today. I would come just to hear Casey’s address. (APPLAUSE) I fell in love with New Orleans before she was born. (LAUGHTER)

I first came here at three to see my mother, who was in nursing school at Charity Hospital. (APPLAUSE) I came at fifteen to hear the Dixieland music.

By the way, you know, I do love George Bush, but saying that I am the best saxophone player to ever occupy the White House is kind of like saying I drove the fastest car in one of New York City’s traffic jams. (LAUGHTER) I mean I guess there’s a limit to how far this bipartisan compliment can go. (LAUGHTER) But I love you outside the White House and beyond that, so there. (LAUGHTER)

You know, we’ve had a wonderful time together and I am profoundly grateful to the President for asking his father and me to head up this fund. It’s been an exciting adventure that we couldn’t have predicted. It’s taken us in directions that we couldn’t have known. And as I think of this commencement speech, I know only three things about them. The speaker is supposed to say something timely, something timeless and be brief. (LAUGHTER) I will try to meet the requirements.

But if you look at this fund and the chance that all of you have given us to have one of the best experiences of our lives, this is not something either of us could ever have planned. Life doesn’t always take you in a predictable direction, but it’s important to understand where you start and have some sense of how to get to where you want to go.

If you look at Katrina and the enormous response it provoked from all around the world –60,000 contributors just to our little fund, and people not just in America, but lots of countries came and gave us money to help you. It is a positive manifestation of the most important fact of your lives — the interdependence of human beings on this planet. And if you look at the negative aspects of Katrina — the lives lost, the property washed away, the dreams broken — it is also evidence of our own interdependence. Читать далее →

Мне сказали, что все будут в халатах (у английского ‘robe’ несколько значений в частности «халат» и «мантия» — прим. ред.). Есть кто из отеля «Дабл-Ю»? Вы не можете вернуть это за меня. Было бы чудесно.

Скажите мне, у всех страшный отходняк после вчерашнего, а?

И почему здесь два микрофона? Что будет, если я буду говорить только в этот? (начинает играть с микрофонами) Почему? Неужели этот лучше?

На самом деле, я в городе проездом, а когда предоставляется возможность толкнуть речь после президентов я говорю своему агенту: «Выбей мне это выступление!»

И, к слову, это мой самый верный способ пойти на выпускной, потому я решила присоединиться к вам.

Я никогда не училась в колледже… Я жила здесь… родилась и росла… когда я была маленькой, моя мать работала в Ньюкомбе, так что пришлось провести довольно много времени здесь. Большое спасибо, Президент Коуэн, глава ученого совета Пиерсон, всему составу факультета. Доктор Олден, Доктор Джил… Поздравляю, это большая честь находиться с вами в этот знаменательный момент. Семьям у друзьям выпускников 2006 моя благодарность. Спасибо, что пригласили меня и моего коллегу сюда в этот день. Я бы пришел и так только чтобы услышать речь Кейси. Я влюбился в Новый Орлеан еще до ее рождения.

Впервые я приехал сюда в три года, чтобы навестить свою маму, которая работала сестрой в госпитале. В пятнадцать я вернулся, чтобы послушать музыку Диксилэнд.

Но, если вы еще раз посмотрите на этот фонд и ту возможность, которую вы предоставили нам — кто бы мог подумать, что это станет лучшим опытом в нашей жизни? Stephen Colbert: Get your own TV show (2006)

Thank you. Thank you very much. First of all, I’m facing a little bit of a conundrum here. My name is Stephen Colbert, but I actually play someone on television named Stephen Colbert, who looks like me, and who talks like me, but who says things with a straight face he doesn’t mean. And I’m not sure which one of us you invited to speak here today. So, with your indulgence, I’m just going to talk and I’m going to let you figure it out.

I wanted to say something about the Umberto Eco quote that was used earlier from The Name of the Rose. That book fascinated me because in it these people are killed for trying to get out of this library a book about comedy, Aristotle’s Commentary on Comedy. And what’s interesting to me is one of the arguments they have in the book is that comedy is bad because nowhere in the New Testament does it say that Jesus laughed. It says Jesus wept, but never did he laugh.

But, I don’t think you actually have to say it for us to imagine Jesus laughing. In the famous episode where there’s a storm on the lake, and the fishermen are out there. And they see Jesus on the shore, and Jesus walks across the stormy waters to the boat. And St. Peter thinks, «I can do this. I can do this. He keeps telling us to have faith and we can do anything. I can do this.» So he steps out of the boat and he walks for—I don’t know, it doesn’t say—a few feet, without sinking into the waves. But then he looks down, and he sees how stormy the seas are. He loses his faith and he begins to sink. And Jesus hot-foots it over and pulls him from the waves and says, «Oh you of little faith.» I can’t imagine Jesus wasn’t suppressing a laugh. How hilarious must it have been to watch Peter—like Wile E. Coyote—take three steps on the water and then sink into the waves.

Well it’s an honor to be giving your Commencement address here today at Knox College. I want to thank Mr. Podesta for asking me two, two and a half years ago, was it? Something like that? We were in Aspen. You know—being people who go to Aspen. He asked me if I would give a speech at Knox College, and I think it was the altitude, but I said yes. I’m very glad that I did. Ray Bradbury: The Great Years Ahead (2000)

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This is fantastic. I never made it to college-I didn’t have enough money-and I decided I was going to be a writer anyway. And the reason I was going to go to college was all those girls. So it’s a good thing I didn’t go.

Before I start, how many of you here today read me in high school? How many? You’re all my bastard children, aren’t you? Thank you, thank you for that.

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, I’d like to tell you a very brief thing about my childhood. I arrived in Los Angeles when I was 13 years old. And I was enamored of Hollywood. I wanted to meet famous people. So, we were a very poor family. So we came out-my dad was looking for work in the Great Depression. And I put on my roller skates-I didn’t have money to take the streetcar. So I put on my roller skates, and I roller skated out to Hollywood looking for famous people. And, by God, I found one! Out in front of Paramount Studios-standing as if he were waiting for me-was W. C. Fields, himself. I couldn’t believe that, you know. And I roller skated up to him, and I said, «Mr. Fields, could I have your autograph?» And he signed and gave it back to me and says,»There you are, you little son of a bitch!» And here I am!

So, I’ve come a long way. I hope I have another 20 years to go. That gives you 20 years to get from here to Mars. That’s the important thing. I’ve got to give you a few rules of hygiene here-very important for the next several days. You can do some of them tonight. First of all, from today on, none of you are ever going to have to watch local television news again, right? Don’t look at it ever. Because it tells you how bad you are. It’s full of rapes, murders, funerals, AIDS, all the good things, huh? So you’re not to look at that.

Now, right after graduation today, make a list of the people who don’t believe in you. And you have a few, don’t you? I had plenty of people who told me not to do what I was going to do. Брэдли Уитфорд (актер)

Актер Брэдли Уитфорд (10 октября 1959 г.) родился в Мэдисоне, штат Висконсин. Изучая английский язык и театральное искусство в Университете Уэслейан, Брэдли оказался более склонен ко второму, а потому, в дальнейшем, он закрепил свое образование в Школе Джулларда – известной кузнице актерских талантов.

Первыми ролями Уитфорда стали небольшие появления в телесериалах в середине восьмидесятых. Постепенно количество ролей росло, однако, особенно заметных и запомнившихся зрителям персонажей так и не появлялось. Стоит заметить, что фильмы, в которые актера приглашали, оказывались далеко не «проходными». Так, в 1990 году он сыграл в «Презумпции невиновности» Алана Дж. Пакулы, а позже в том же году появился в вестерне «Молодые стрелки 2» Джефа Мерфи, а также в драме Пенни Маршалл «Пробуждение».

В 1992 году Уитфорд сыграл и в горячо принятом зрителями и критиками фильме Мартина Бреста «Запах женщины», а через год появился и еще в одном чрезвычайно успешном фильме – драматическом триллере Клинта Иствуда «Идаельный мир». 93-й год ознаменовался для актера и еще одним крупным событием – одной из главных ролей в трогательной и драматической драме Брюса Джоэла Рубина «Моя жизнь». What’s up, Mad City?!

It’s great to be back in my hometown. On behalf of the acting president of the United States, I want to congratulate you all on your tremendous achievement.

A commencement address is what we call in show business a tough gig. You’ve got a huge room, you’ve got a big, distracted crowd that thinks they know everything about everything — and probably stayed out a little too late last night celebrating. I heard you at the hotel, by the way. And you’ve got a bunch of family members of various ages who you have to worry about offending if you happen to get a little too honest.

Somebody once said it’s like being the body at a wake. They stick you in the middle of the room, but deep down they really don’t want to hear a lot out of you.

The sad truth is, I don’t even remember who the speaker was at my graduation. I remember squinting a lot and a vague sense that I would never again be around so many attractive, available young people in my life. It is my solemn duty to inform you that that fear is entirely well founded. This is coming from a guy who works in Hollywood, by the way.

So I begin this address not only with the full expectation that I will soon be forgotten, but with the additional humiliation that there will probably be no one there to remind you of who I was.

I just want to take a moment to note that the commencement speaker at Concordia College this year was the president of the United States, George W. Bush. Concordia has about 5,000 students. The University of Wisconsin has about 40,000. Yes, my friends, the question hangs over this beautiful Kohl Center like a foul stench. Why couldn’t you get a more significant speaker?

Why would the University of Wisconsin, a school with a reputation and the stature to attract a genuine world leader — at least some uncelebrated public servant — the guy who runs the dog pound in Baraboo — somebody, for God’s sake! Why would you opt instead for a glorified circus clown from a television show? I can’t answer that question, my friends. This is uncomfortable for all of us. I feel your shame. Читать далее →

Doug Marlette: It’s a long and winding road (2005)

Congratulations, class of 2005, the greatest graduating class in the history of Durham Academy. If you’ve grown up here in the Triangle this may be the first southern accent you’ve heard, so I will try to speak clearly and distinctly and remove all tobacco products from my mouth.

This is a glorious day for you graduating seniors and a bittersweet one for your parents, teachers and counselors.

One morning last fall at the beginning of the school year, as Ed Costello was standing there watching the parking lot fill up with Beamers, SUVs, Mercedes and Lexuses he turned to Michael Ulku-Steiner and in a hushed reverential tone said, «I believe of all the students we have ever seen matriculate here at Durham Academy, this class, the class of 2005, is surely the most recent.»

It is an honor to talk to a graduating class where practically everybody makes straight A’s. Everybody excels. Everybody is sensitive, supportive, diverse and multicultural. I’ve seen your college applications and all of you have a 4. 5 grade-point-average, you’ve worked with the needy and the homeless, with Aids babies in sub-Saharan Africa, you’ve unlocked the secrets of the human genome, and in your spare time you cobble your own shoes. Upon graduation many of you will be canonized. Others will simply be assumed bodily into heaven. I salute you.

Как жизнь, безумный городишко?

Как же приятно вернуться в родной город. От лица действующего президента Соединенных Штатов, я хочу поздравить вас с великим достижением.

Выпускная речь, выражаясь на жаргоне актеров, непростая «работенка». Перед вами огромная аудитория, толпа то и дело отвлекающихся людей, которые уверены, что знают все на свете, а накануне им стоило пораньше закончить веселиться. К слову, вчера в отеле я слышал ваши гулянья. И, знаете, правдивый рассказ о ваших гулянках может покоробить ваших пожилых родственников.

Кто-то однажды сравнил выступление с моментом пробуждения человеческого тела. Ты стоишь в середине комнаты, но там, в глубине, на самом деле тебя никто не хочет слушать.

Грустно признавать, но я не помню, кто произносил речь на моем выпускном. Помню лишь я часто озирался и думал, что больше никогда не буду среди такого количества привлекательных и доступных молодых людей. И я считаю своей священной обязанностью сообщить вам, что мои страхи подтвердились. Обратите внимание, это вам говорит парень, работающий в Голливуде!

Так что я начну свою речь не только с уверенностью, что меня вскоре забудут, но и с предвосхищаемым чувством унижения за то, что никто вам не сможет напомнить кем был тот парень, выступавший у вас на выпускном.

Отвлекусь еще на минутку и напомню, что напутственную речь в Колледже Конкордия в этом году произносил президент США Джодж Буш-младший. В Конкордии учится порядка 5 тысяч студентов.
